Tax season often causes headaches for those who must pay them, and for those who must prepare them. Seems that the code is ever-changing and is almost impossible to keep up with. As I mentioned in last year’s post, the first form was a mere 4 pages long. What are the odds that your return will be that short?

April 15 seemed like such a long way from New Year’s Day, didn’t it? And yet, in a little over six weeks, tax day will be upon us.
One interesting fact about the income tax is that we did not always have one. There had been attempts to create a nationalized income tax before – incremental steps, to be sure. The Currency Act of 1764, The Revenue Act of 1767, the Sugar Act (which supplemented the Molasses Act of 1733), and many other acts were enacted.
Our current income tax was enacted in the form of an amendment to the US Constitution, the 16th Amendment, in 1913. The new Bureau of Internal Revenue sent out a Form 1040 (which was part of the agency’s normal sequential numbering process). No money was collected that first year; taxpayers just completed the form and returned it. The following year, however, several congressmen complained that the income tax form was too complicated. The House Sergeant at Arms even offered lawmakers assistance in preparing their own returns.
The number of pages in that first 1040 form? Four.
